As someone that is trying to make a part time wage out of selling on eBay in Australia. I found it really hard to find information that related to Australian resellers.
There is a million America resellers on YouTube and TikTok telling you how easy it is to make money, but what they are talking about simply doesn’t work for us in the southern hemisphere.
So here are somethings I have learnt that will make your life easier.
1. Get a My Post Business account.
You do not need an ABN, just an email and address. Every thing I saw before starting this told me that eBay gave you the best discount on shipping labels and from what I have found that simply isn’t true. The more you use your Aus Post account, the better your savings are. I went from band 1 to band 2 in about 3 weeks. I use “flat rate” shipping on eBay and charge $11 for a small satchel, on band 2 it cost me just over $9, so that is an extra $2 profit every time.
Also, you can link your eBay to your My Post account and import your orders, so you never have to worry about miss-typing an address and sending your order to the wrong place.
2. Sell international.
I know it sounds scary, I was so hesitant of screwing up the shipping costs, but so far using eBay’s calculated shipping, has worked out. My best piece of advise is, when you list something, pack it, as if you were about to send it, then add the weight and dimensions to the eBay listing. Don’t guess. The difference between 100 grams and a few centimeters on a box could lose you your entire profit margin.
3. Check Your Stock Often.
This isn’t exclusive to Australia, but I think it is important. I hadn’t even been on eBay for 90 days and a bunch of my listings went missing. From what I have learnt from the eBay groups, eBay will just remove listings that get no traffic. I had a bunch of my boyfriends limited edition pop culture shirts up for sale, that just disappeared. So maybe once a month dedicate some time to doing a stock take.
4. Be fucking friendly.
This kind of relates back to point 1. But be friendly to the people that work at your local Auspost. If I am just dropping parcels off I no longer have to wait in line. Last time I went in there one of the women gave me a discount code that bumped me up to band 3 savings for 6 weeks. The people that work there can either make it really easy for you, or really hard. So be fucking nice to them.
5. Don’t rely on Op-shops.
The prices at the Op-Shops around me are freaking insane. I saw a Kmart night gown today, still had the Kmart tag on for $5. Salvo’s were also selling it for $5. Get on Facebook marketplace, go to garage sales, find your local Sunday morning market, see if you have a local auction house. In W.A at least, the profit simply isn’t there solely buying from Op-shops.
