The Truth About Side Hustles

My Journey into Etsy.

As I mentioned in my May Sales Update I decided to spend this month working solely on getting my Etsy store up and running.
The hardest part of starting an Etsy is figuring out what you’re going to sell, there are a million YouTube videos and TikTok’s telling you how easy it is to start a print on demand business that will make you thousands of dollars a month. The problem with those videos is that thousands of other people have seen them and are doing the same thing. Just look at the views on these videos on the first page on YouTube, If you’re watching these tutorials, you’re competing with over 100,000 people.

So the first thing I did was get rid of all the old print on demand products, and think of a new store name. Once I had the new store name I jumped on Canva and created a logo for Etsy, Facebook and Instagram.
The next step is pretty obvious, create a business Instagram and Facebook page. Then I jumped on ChatGPT and got it to create a week worth of posts optimized for engagement and new followers, went into the Meta business suite and scheduled up all the posts.

Now here comes the second hardest part, actually making the things you’re going sell, you have to have at least one of each item made so you can photograph them. I personally spent a day making a couple of each, so that once they do sell you can ship them the same day and hopefully score some good reviews.

Once you have all your photos it’s time to make your listings. Etsy is a bit like eBay, in that they really like it if you use all of the characters in your title and you will want to repeat some of those words in your tags as well. Etsy has millions of users worldwide and it is going to be really hard to sell something that no one else has thought of. So you’re next step will be to check what other people are selling similar items for, you want to sit somewhere in the lower middle price range to start with. You also need to make sure you’re covering your cost of goods, and factor in the 6.5% fee that Etsy will take on the total sale price, and that includes what you will charge for shipping.

Now that is all done, you are ready to post your listings. As of today I have 9 active listings (some are still print on demand, but they match the vibe of my shop) and I have already made 1 sale. I only made about $4 profit, but I plan to start small and build up over time.
If you would like to check out my Etsy you can find it here and as always subscribe to keep up with this journey
